When it comes to granola, historically speaking, there have only been two options: healthy and cardboard-tasting, or delicious but brimming with added sugar. Until SkinnyGenius came along, that is: this new good-for-you granola tastes far better than granola has any business being. The brand has quickly become a celeb favorite for those reasons.
The ingredient list includes just nine things, most of which are already in any well-stocked kitchen—whole oats, chia seeds, pepitas, pecans, cinnamon, honey, olive oil, sea salt, and just a dash of brown sugar. The result? A flavor-packed snack that will keep you sated all day. The junk-free granola is preservative free, packed with tons of protein from the pepitas (a yummy roasted pumpkin seed), has no gluten, dairy, soy, or wheat, and clocks in at just 90 calories for a single serving snack pack.
While the company was launched by Nicki Renna, a badass young lawyer-turned-TV writer who had long struggled with stress-related gut issues, the recipe came from her mom: a Mexican American immigrant and former newscaster, who became a competitive body builder after having three daughters, and was looking for a snack that wouldn’t blow her training program.
“She would get up at 5 a.m. to do her cardio so she could make us breakfast and take us to school, then go to the gym to lift and train and pose,” says Renna about her mother, who came up with the original family recipe. “She taught me that being strong, having muscles, knowing your body, as a woman, was cool, and that’s what SkinnyGenius is about. Eating stripped-down, good-for-you ‘skinny’ recipes that celebrate and enhance what’s best for each individual body.”
Mom FTW.
SkinnyGenius is sold in grocery stores around Los Angeles, or sold online here.
